Home >> Miika’s garden
September 4, 2009
This past spring Miika planted about 10 packages of sunflower seeds in little cups that sat on our windowsill. When they were big and strong we transplanted them into this little patch along the side of our building and next to the playground. Whalah!! Here they are and it’s been a lot of fun watching them grow. This is Miika’s little band of gypsies that she hangs out with nearly every afternoon.
I feel like our dust is finally settling. With the exception of the debris that is still in storage and in our former neighbor’s garage, we’ve found a place for everything. We’re toying with the possibility of buying a cottage in Michigan rather than paying for storage here. Plus, as much as we love what we are doing, we need to occasionally escape to somewhere quiet. I’m somewhat hesitant because we just unloaded a mortgage and I’m not anxious to jump in again. BUT…if we rented it out, chances are it would pay for itself. We’re going to do some “research” this weekend on the east side of the lake, maybe take in a sunset and see the stars…
In the meantime, we are living in our Urban Cottage…a cozy, efficient home with everything necessary, and nothing extra. I often pinch myself because after the long trek up the mountain of transition and downsizing, we are finally in a place of contentment. The other night we were out in our courtyard having a glass of wine with our neighbor. Nathan was strumming on his guitar as he often does, which prompted another neighbor to bring her guitar out and sing a few folk tunes. Two of our Turkish students stuck their heads out the window to enjoy the music and pretty soon everyone was singing along. It was magical and golden—a prize moment out of the blue. These are the times that we are here to facilitate and hope to make more habitual.
