    August 2, 2009

Last Tuesday we left our keys on the kitchen counter and said goodbye to a very, very, very fine house. Even though the market stinks and price went low, I’m glad that the new homeowners “get” what we did for the past 8 years and will continue on with the restoration. So many memories came flooding back of all the gatherings of friends and family. The holidays, the birthday parties… a house is not just bricks and mortar, it’s sacred.

On Tuesday I hit a level of exhaustion after emptying the house and garage of all the bits, that I don’t recall ever feeling. Then on Wednesday while we were in the waiting room at the dentist’s office, Nathan winced, coughed and emptied his breakfast into my hands, his shoes and all over the floor. Miika and the nurses came to the rescue, we cleaned it up and rescheduled. That was four days ago. After two trips to the emergency room, he was admitted to the hospital where we are sitting right now waiting for him to turn the corner. Yesterday at 4 a.m. I started to feel the effects of being awake for about 45 hours. It’s like crumbling and falling apart uncontrollably. Paul and I have been taking turns staying with Nathan while the nurses battle his fever, congestion and general stupor. He won’t eat or drink so all he’s had in the past 4 days is an IV and the occasional bite. We don’t have an actual diagnosis. Maybe it’s strep, just a bad flu, or West Nile… tests are being run.

Life feels relentless right now and we’re just waiting for some bright light at the end of this tunnel.
