Home >> moved at last!
February 19, 2009
This past Saturday, we finally moved into our apartment and slept here. As we made the last trip of the day down Thatcher Avenue toward our new home, Miika burst into tears, sad about moving away from her beloved Chicago house. I must admit that I felt a twinge of melancholy too, wondering if this would really become home. It was a strange homeless feeling as we’d unplugged emotionally from our Chicago home and hadn’t bonded with the River Forest home yet. Nathan, on the other hand is going with the flow and adjusting better than any of us.
But, what a difference a few days has made. Tuesday the kids went to their new school. It felt so good to walk 3 blocks down the street to school! Miika and Nathan didn’t even cry and their teachers were amazed at how well they seemed to adjust. Although, one of Nathan’s teachers said that he gave her “the lip” a few times which is a sad little pouty thing he does when he’s missing us, but he didn’t fall apart. Miika told me she “almost cried” the first day, “but kept it in.” Lincoln school is a beautiful and small school bursting with colors and sounds that make me happy. Yesterday when I picked the kids up, one of the classrooms was being entertained by a folk musician playing a harmonica which made Nathan smile and dance.
Yesterday afternoon, through our kitchen window, I noticed our Korean student coming home from class and thought he could use a home-cooked meal. He accepted my invitation and at around 6pm had his first pot roast ever! After supper we treated him to some ice cream at the Brown Cow in Forest Park. I have a deep sense that we are supposed to be here and it finally feels right.
