    December 15, 2008

I learned a new word today.

Yesterday as we were driving to church, Miika announced that “everything has a color.”

    “You’re right, Miika,” I answered rather non-chalauntly.

“But Mommy, even things that don’t have color have color.”
    Now she had my attention…

    “Like letters and numbers.”

    “Oh?” I said.

“Yes, ‘A’ is yellow, ‘B’ is blue, ‘C’ is red…”
She went on to tell me that numbers and days of the week also had colors and attributed colors to every one. Then I quizzed her randomly asking her what color “G” was…”Z”, etc…She didn’t forget the color that she’d attributed the first time.

So, today I did a little googling and discovered that this color sense has a name: synesthesia. I found an article in a Yale publication that stated, “Synesthetes are at the highest end of the spectrum of creative cognition possible among humans.”

WOW! I knew that Miika was creative, but had no idea about any of this. Now I’m fascinated. I also discovered that synesthetes are often left-handed, which Miika is. I have a lot of reading up to do!

By the way Saturday is silver and Sunday is gold.

I’m not surprised at all. I was amazed when we visited you years ago how much of a color sense she had at 2 years of age! She has been gifted!! Cool new word-
