Well, we have a whopping 817 square feet to work with. This is the first chapter of downsizing a household and changing a lifestyle….completely. The way I figure it, we’ll have room for 1/2 of our furniture. Fortunately there are lots of little pockets of space throughout the building for storage. It’ll be an evolving adventure. The best part is that none of this will happen overnight. We can move gradually, weeding, sorting, pitching, and giving away as we go. It will be an exercise in efficiency. I remember watching one of Oprah’s shows that featured 3-4 families who lived in tiny spaces…it can be done. We as Americans have grown accustomed to having so much stuff and lots of space. What seemed like an entitlement has eventually eaten us alive in the form of debt, stress, and the loss of time to do important things. So, we are beginning the journey to get completely out of debt, save money, and downsize our housing situation.
Several years ago (before children) Paul and I traveled to England to visit friends for a few weeks. Probably the biggest factor that struck me was how small everything was…houses, refrigerators, sinks, rooms. A trip to IKEA reminds me of that trip and the amazingly efficient use of space. Here we go!

Aunt Liita, You inspire me in so many ways I can’t count. The latest inspiration, downsizing! You hit the nail on the head, we could all benefit from giving up some things. We are struggling to keep our heads above water and the Lord sure does have his way of testing my faith. He seems to be doing it quite often too! We are talking about downsizing, but just the thought freaks me out. Could I ever really do it? This is where your inspriation comes in, I can do it! We are going though some similar situations, circumstances are a bit different but very much the same struggles. I am encouraged by your blogs and they give me faith and the ability to see a way out, lets say there is light at the end of this dark tunnel. Keep’em coming I love reading them!
