Home >> move that bus!!!
October 5, 2008
Paul and I have had the most intense week! His job became our job as we staged 4 apartments, a lounge and a courtyard for an international tour. I hardly know how to describe it except to say that we we worked 12-16 hour days, shopping, setting up, primping, cleaning, fussing and standing back in awe at the finished product. I took pictures, but they hardly show the amount of work done…I need a wide angle lens and some good lighting. We worked along side a construction crew and the executive director of this ELS housing project to prepare for 30+ international representatives and the administration of Dominican University to come and view the residence where students will come to live while they take a crash course in ESL. The experience was completely exhilarating and exhausting in the best possible way. We are so excited about the future of this position and our involvement in the lives of students around the world!
Paul assembled tables and chairs and installed blinds while I shopped for rugs, wall art, linens, flowers and food for 40. For the most part I worked while Miika was in school, but the kids also tagged along shopping or playing in the apartments while we worked. Poor Nathan didn’t have a decent nap in his bed all week, just snatched cat naps in the van in between doing this or that. He was a trooper. I thank God for my mom who stepped in the last two days to take care of the kids for us.
When the guests arrived, I felt just like Ty when he yells, “MOVE THAT BUS.” What a thrill to be done with everything and have the sun shining on a day that was supposed to be cold and rainy! I was praying all morning for those clouds to vanish! Friday was a fantastic day. I think the only detail that we forgot was the cream and sugar for the coffee that we didn’t plan to make until the last minute. There is nothing like the feeling of good exhaustion! Now our attention will shift to the day-to-day tasks of taking care of the building and the residents. My dream is to make this feel like a safe home away from home for international students. We count it a great privilege to be accepted into this position as a family.

Beautiful job, Liita! I’d like to live there.
