    Home >> altered and repurposed

    September 13, 2008

Once upon a time, when I was pregnant with Miika, I splurged and bought a cashmere, hooded sweater by Ralph Lauren. It was soft, long, warm, light-weight, covered my pregnant belly and all I really needed for a winter coat. I loved it because it was so comfortable and not thick or bulky. I have long monkey arms and the sleeves actually came down to the middle of my hands. Then, one day, my laundry-challenged husband put it in the dryer……….

I tried to save it by soaking and stretching it, but it was never the same. The torso of the sweater wasn’t too bad, but sleeves hiked up about an inch higher than my wrists, which I hate. I couldn’t bring myself to put it in the donation bag, and have been hanging on to it to perhaps alter it someday. This week’s window-shopping walk with Nathan inspired me to give it a try. I found a $2 sweater at a thrift shop with very long sleeves, rummaged through my button jar and whalah! I think it has been reincarnated!

      Aunt Liita,

So did you make this for you or did it shrink so small its for Miika? Either way LOVE IT!

So cute!! Maybe you could turn the sleeves into mittens. I did that once with cut up sweaters but I cannot recall how exactly. I remember that the cuff was the mitten cuff. Other than that small tip, you’re on your own. :)

Thank you Amy! I think I will do the mittens…will figure it out.

I’ve always wondered how to keep a sweater from unraveling once it is cut. Do you just sew it with a regular sewing machine? Do you have to serge the edges? Or perhaps cover them with bias tape? What did you do?
