    August 28, 2008

Tuesday was Miika’s big day—her first day in Kindergarten. So far she doesn’t like school in the morning, but in the afternoon, she can’t stop talking about it… I’m sure she’ll be just fine in a week or so. It’s a whole new framework and structure to fall into. As for me, I’d always heard other parents say how they cried on their child’s first day of school, but I didn’t feel that way at all. Miika is so ready to learn and grow. She resists my instructions at home and drags her feet at everything I tell her to do, so I’ve been VERY ready for someone else to push her. She’s extremely bright, but there’s something about my personality that makes her keep it inside. The dynamics are entirely different in a classroom situation.

Yesterday Miika and Nathan had eye appointments. Miika needs stronger lenses and Nathan, much to my relief does not need glasses yet. Whew! Most kids with DS need glasses very early. The exciting part of the appointment was when my 2.5-year-old Nathan could read the chart and tell the doctor what letters he was looking at. It sent a ripple of excitement through the optical department at UIC that a little boy with Down syndrome could read the chart!!!! “Eeee, Eth, Oooo, Ennnn, Da, Ba, Ka, Thzzzzz….” I could not have been more proud!

      Aunt Liita,

Such great news as always with your kiddos! I proud of Nathan and how much you have taught him at this young age. I have been very lazy with Matthew, he will be 4 in Nov and we are just now recognizing letters and their sounds.. WAY TO NATHAN(and Liita)!
