Home >> to whine or not to whine

    May 13, 2008

I’ve been debating about whether or not to complain about a rotten Mother’s Day or not…someone else out there always has it worse…like the moms who lost everything in the tornadoes that hit this weekend or the moms in China who lost their families in the earth quake.

No, mine was not that bad, but we basically had to forget Mother’s Day. It started at 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning when Miika came upstairs and headed straight to our bathroom crying with her head over the toilet, her body raging with a 104.5 fever. I ran downstairs for the Motrin. After about 20 minutes, the fever came down, her tummy settled and she snuggled up between us. We all went back to sleep for a while. But it was still Mother’s Day and I’m on nursery duty the 2nd week of every month and it was too late to call anyone to replace me. So, Nathan and I went to church, thinking perhaps we could salvage some of the day and take my mom out to lunch at least. I drove through blinding rain on 290 and got to the church on time dripping wet…of course there were no parking places near by. My “chauffeur” Paul was home taking care of Miika, so no door service. Yup, I was feeling a bit sorry for myself. So, Nathan and I dried off in the nursery. Then one of the little tw0-year-olds started crying inconsolably. One of the other moms in the nursery tried to comfort him then decided to change his diaper. He was squirming around so much that I went over to try to comfort him and hold him still…then the excitement began. He was covered with little red spots…chicken pox? He is a twin, so I checked his brother who was not fussing but did have emerging little spots on his legs. So, the flurry began. All 20 or so two-year-olds were rushed out of the room and parents were alerted to come quick. The room was disinfected. I had chicken pox as a kid, so I offered to hold this little guy until his parents came. Nathan was rushed out of the room with all the other ones. He’s been vaccinated, so I was not too worried.

Anyway, so as not to infect the folks in my regular spot in church, I decided to just take Nathan home and get cleaned up. We stayed in and caught up on laundry. But I vow to have another Mother’s Day this month!! On Sunday the 25th there is a very cool craft show coming up at Fitzgeralds in Oak Park. Here’s the promo copy:
