For years I’ve had a dream to be a shopkeeper. The shop has taken on many shapes and colors. But at the core, is the love of creative stuff and being with people. When Nathan was born, the shop dream took on another dimension…to somehow fund services for people with disabilities and to employ people with disabilities. I’ve been journaling about ideas for this kind of place for two years and thinking about a store since high school. A few moons ago I was an assistant manager in a fabric store and had a great time helping people design curtains, slipcovers, simple pillows, etc… Well, big news!!! Our church is going to start a resale shop in the Wheaton area very soon! It will accomplish two dreams: funding and employing! For now, I’ll be working on the logo and promotional materials, but hope to help out in other ways too.
Now, for part two of this shop idea. I have not been able to get it out of my head that there must be a way to recycle the thrift stuff into new treasures, so I’ve been digging around the internet looking for ideas and spotting products in local shops that are actually somehow recycled. Yesterday I found a great website by Elizabeth Delehaunty that is absolutely fabulous! Check it out! She has designed very cool, funky clothes for women and children made from thrift finds. This is precisely what I’ve been cookin’ up in my head!
OK, I’m going to admit something…there are days when I get very restless sitting here at a computer…I love to move, do stuff, go, make stuff, get out the glue, scissors, thread, buttons, beads, paint, and glop it all together. I suppose that’s where my collages come from and I’m ever so grateful for the clients who have asked me to create them. Now to combine this collaging-designing-shopping thing together for the future….is a dream! God help me, I’m gonna to do it!

Awesome site, Liita! I LOVE this idea. One Christmas I made people mittens I sewed (by hand) from cut up wool sweaters. Here’s another idea on a site I like Mindful Momma. I can’t wait to see what YOU come up with! I get lots of inspiration from your site. Thank you!
Liita,
I love this idea. I confess that I too have been wanting to really dig my hands into something really hands-on creative! Elliya is such an inspiration to me – she has no inhibitions and just dives into her latest idea.
Have you seen Altered Couture? If not, be sure to check it out. Can’t wait to visit the new store!!
