Home >> when kingdoms collide
January 14, 2008
This past Friday and Saturday, Paul and I attended a marriage conference at our church. I was amazed that around 400 people had signed up, mostly from our church! It affirmed to me that we ALL have troubles that need fixing. Paul Tripp, a pastor from Philadelphia, was our speaker…and a tremendous speaker he is. He went right to the core of what causes all the trouble in any given relationship. It was honest, deep, and insightful. My only question after it was all over was why it took our church so long to invite this man for a conference. My head is still spinning…
If there was a way to put the whole message in a little bag, it’s that two individuals that try to unite in marriage are almost certainly opposites who come with two very separate ways of thinking, two separate and often different dreams, but most importantly, two different kingdoms that have everything to do with what each person wants from life rather than what God wants for them as a couple. Prayer, humility, accountability to scripture and a community, honesty about one’s flaws and openness are the only way to survive the inevitable struggle that is marriage. We both came away from the conference humbled and recharged.
