Home >> forever jewels

Life gets so jam packed full of necessary activities that I often worry about how I will provide opportunities for the memories that become magical…especially at Christmas time. I’ve been dodging the Santa question for a few weeks trying to keep him alive for at least one more year….
“Mommy, is Santa for real?”
“That’s what they say.”
Defying common sense, we left the house last night at 6:30 (despite Nathan’s fever and runny nose) and went with friends to the Lincoln Park Zoo to see the lights. We only had about an hour and a half before closing, but it was well worth keeping the kids up past bedtime. Miika is at the age when she is starting to have experiences that will stay with her forever like jewels in a velvet bag. If we stock her up with enough treasured moments, perhaps some of them will stand the test of time to create childhood memories worth recalling when she is old. I must say that it was the perfect night, not too cold, but chilly enough to appreciate hot chocolate and to keep the ice sculptures from melting. Plus, I always like a bargain. The zoo is free and parking is affordable. Even though we breezed by some sleepy gorillas, giraffes, fish, big cats, penguins and an aardvark, I think the experience qualified as magical.
