We have the clock over the fireplace, the yellow lamp, the cow jumping over the moon, the telephone, the cat, the mittens, the little house, the socks, the bears, the chairs, the bowl full of mush (aka oatmeal), the windows that look over the noises everywhere, and even the mouse. The only thing we are missing is the old lady whispering hush…unless of course that’s me? I try to introduce other books at bedtime, but Nathan just points to Goodnight Moon and won’t pay attention to any others until I read it first….so we read it at nap time and bedtime every day. He makes the “h” sound for hot while he points to the fireplace, says “oo” for cow and clicks his teeth together like a tick while he points to the clocks. He signs moon, rabbit, shoes (for the slippers beside rabbit’s bed), bear, house, and star while he looks and listens to the story. I suppose the book captivates Nathan because it contains bits of his own little world in our home. Every time I read Goodnight Moon, I see a new detail…have you ever noticed how that little mouse gets around…eating the oatmeal, warming himself by the fire, looking at the stars from the window sill? For a book with not-so-great illustrations, this book is simply magical. No wonder it’s a classic.
